(Blogmensgo, gay blog of November 13, 2018) The midterm elections held in the USA on 6 November 2018 led to some surprising results. On the other hand, it's not surprising that gay representative Jared Polis became the new governor of Colorado, and that Kim Davis, who served in prison in 2015 for refusing to marry gay men, has now lost her position as Rowan County registrar via the ballot box.
Jared Polis becomes first openly gay governor
The voters in Colorado elected Jared Polis (43), a democratic millionaire, into the office of governor. He defeated the Republican candidate Walker Stapleton with about 52 percent of the votes. For the first time, an openly gay politician will become governor of an American state in January 2019.
Polis was also the first openly gay politician to be elected to the House of Representatives in 2008 and has been re-elected ever since. This means that homosexuality has not played a major role in the election campaign for some time now, even though there are currently only seven gay representatives (including Polis) in the US Congress.
Health, education and energy were Jared Polis' priorities during the campaign for the Midterm elections.
In fact, Jared Polis is the second LGBT person to win a governor's seat in the United States. In Oregon, his democratic colleague Kate Brown was elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2017 after making her bisexuality public in the 2000s.
Jared Polis has been in Congress since 2009 and has had the opportunity to introduce or support laws for the benefit of the LGBT community, including the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 and the 1994 law on systematic exclusion of LGBT people by the military, known as “Don't ask, don't tell”.
Jared Polis is a pioneer in politics not only because of his open sexual orientation. The Princeton graduate is also a pioneer of Internet trading, with which he built up his wealth in the 1990s. The passionate geek supports several non-profit organizations, including his Jared Polis Foundation, which supports the teaching and development of a computer and technology culture.
Polis has been living with Marlon Reis as a couple since the 2000s. They have a boy and a girl.
Kim Davis: Penalized by the voters
Voters in Rowan County, Kentucky, elected Elwood Caudill Jr. to head the registry office. The democratic candidate defeated the outgoing official Kim Davis, who for three years had become an icon of the ultra-religious homophobic right, with sovereignty.
Here are the election promises made by Elwood Caudill Jr. in mid-October 2018 – including the equal treatment of all marriage candidates, here as a simple sound document:
As a reminder: Three years ago, Kim Davis refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses under religious pretexts. In particular, she had rejected David Ermold, who wanted to marry his partner. Despite her five-day detention, Kim Davis was not removed from office and was therefore able to continue her duties.
As we hear, homophobic fanatics in Romania have also made Kim Davis an icon of homophobia before the referendum that led to a fiasco for the homophobic movement on the weekend of 6 October 2018.
In the meantime, David Ermold raised funds to compete against Davis, but lost the democratic nomination in May 2018 to Elwood Caudill Jr, who changed parties in 2015 after being defeated by a narrow majority of Davis in 2014. Caudill said before his election against Davis that he would treat all couples applying for a marriage permit equally, regardless of their sexual orientation.
