(Blogmensgo, gay blog of October 12, 2016) Yesterday was the International Coming-out Day. This initiative started in the United States in 1988 as a day when celebrities (and less known people) were supposed to officially come out of the closet. However, there was only one such official statement this year: Three days too early, Mexican actress and singer Sara Ramirez (Grey’s Anatomy) publicly announced to be bisexual.
In a photo tweet on October 8, 2016, Sara Ramirez is holding a sign saying: “I’m a human. Let’s work together to end LGBTQ youth homelessness.” In the message next to the photo, she calls herself “queer, bisexual.”
Well tweeted, Sara Ramirez!
Her actual coming-out happened the same day during an event called “40 to None Summit” organized by True Colors Fund, an association fighting to give homeless LGBT youths a place to stay.
In Grey’s Anatomy, Sara coincidently plays the role of the bisexual surgeon Callie Torres. In 2012, the actress married her long-time boyfriend Ryan DeBolt, and she uses her wedding photo as a profile photo in social networks.
What face would your family and friends make upon your own coming-out? ©comingoutday.ch
It is a pity that no famous soccer or tennis player used October 11 a an opportunity for his coming-out. We are still waiting for the two football (soccer) players of the English Premier League who were set to come out during the summer of 2016 (see our article). A coming-out of such celebrities might just remove a lot of prejudices that are still too present in our society – and in sports even more so.
