Lambda Literary Awards 2016: Awards Show Coming Soon

(Blogmensgo, gay blog of May 19, 2016) The 28th Lammy Awards Show will take place in New York on June 6, 2016. The Lammy is an award for LGBTQ literature corresponding to the Grammies in music and the Emmies for TV.

The Lammy award honors gay, lesbian, bi- and transsexual authors as well as straight authors whose work features a gay or lesbian subject or persona. Only a few of the awards are limited to LGBT writers. With this award, the jury wants to honor literary quality and a reference to LGBTQ subjects.

The list of nominees for the Lammies 2016 was published in March 2016. All titles were available for purchase in the United States in 2015.

The various categories comprehend books initially published in English or translated from other languages.

Nominations even include works from authors who are no longer alive, for example a collection of stories by Truman Capote (1924-1984) that had not been published before: The Early Stories of Truman Capote.

According to statistics by Out magazine, there are 933 candidates for the various categories.

For each participating book, a fee of $45 must be paid. The total of 41,985 USD is quite considerable for the Nonprofit world.

The various categories like Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans or LGBT are divided into sub-categories like fiction, non-fiction, poetry, biography, autobiography, erotic literature etc.

Looking at the quality of the books, we will know more after the awards ceremony. In any case, the award winners of 2015 featured a very good biography on Tennessee Williams by John Lahr.

The candidate list in the non-fiction category features The Gay Revolution: The Story of the Struggle by Lillian Faderman (see our article)

We are awaiting June 6 and the list of awards granted.
