Pride.be, the Belgian Gay Pride: Celebrate and Remember
(Blogmensgo, gay blog of May 13, 2016) Brussels and Paris have been mourning since the terrorist attacks. There is no doubt that, besides jolly celebrations, people will remember the victims at the Gay Prides in Brussels and the Pride March (Mache des fiertés) in Paris. In Brussels, the pride festival is already tomorrow, Saturday May 14, 2016.
The Belgian Gay Pride festival is now officially called Pride.be, just like the respective website. The Facebook page keeps the name Belgian Pride.
The parade has been modified this year to avoid the memorial site for the victims of March 22, i.e. the Stock Exchange Square (Place de la Bourse).
It will begin at Mount Arts (Mont des Arts) at 2 p.m., which offers a wonderful view of the city center.
The organizers Cavaria, Arc-en-Ciel Wallonie and Rainbowhouse Brussels had chosen the fight against homophobia as the central theme last year. This year, the slogan is: “I decide.” It should not be up to the authorities or physicians to decide on a person’s gender but only on the person him- or herself.
Even though Pride.be has been sponsored by municipal, local and regional authorities, the message is clear: The laws are transphobic and have to be modified.
The second slogan this year is: “Love is too beautiful to be hidden.” Maybe that should apply to all the football players participating in the European Championships 2016. 😉
As in 2014, up to 100,000 visitors are expected at the parade this year. However, since the weather does not look very nice, there may only be around 80,000 (as in 2013 and 2015).
As an inspiration, here are some images of Pride.be 2015.
We wish all the participants a lot of fun in Brussels – and bring an umbrella, just in case…
