Berlin Wants to Open a Home for LGBT Refugees

(Blogmensgo, gay blog of January 29, 2016) The state of Berlin is planning to open a home for 100 to 120 LGBT refugees in March 2016. This is supposed to protect LGBT refugees from homophobic harassment and violence in the regular welcome centers and homes for refugees and asylum seekers.

The association “Schwulenberatung Berlin” (Gay counseling Berlin) was asked to establish this new institution. They are already looking for qualified staff such as an ideally multilingual psychologist with LGBT experience (application deadline: January 31).

Schwulenberatung Berlin has already established a welcome center for LGBTQI refugees (Wilhelmstraße 115 in Berlin-Kreuzberg). By opening a home for older LGBT people called “Living Space Diversity” (Lebensort Vielfalt, at 59-60 Niebuhrstraße in Berlin-Charlottenburg), the association has already proven its competence in such matters (see video below).

However, the capacity of this home specially geared towards the LGBTQI population amongst the refugees will be far from sufficient: A total of 3,500 gay, lesbian, bi-, trans- and intersexual people are currently estimated to live in Berlin.

In any case, this will be the first home of its kind in Germany.
