(Blogmensgo, 10 October 2012) Girona is the second city after Barcelona, Spain to establish an LGBT council. The inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender in Girona City Council will however require a year of transition.
Carles Puigdemont, mayor of Girona and a member of the Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC, center-right), has approved a proposal to establish an LGBT council. The initial proposal, presented in 2011, comes from a municipal councilor affiliated with the leftmost independence.
The creation of the "council of gays and lesbians" (this is its official name) has been effective since October 8, 2012. The final integration of this structure - which also includes bisexual and transgender people into the current council will take a year. LGBT council will use the twelve months to give an existence of its own, through statutes and specific organization.
For a year, the LGBT council will work like a classic council, but parallel to the elected municipal council. It will be in October 2013 that the structure will be fully integrated into municipal authorities. The objective is twofold: to represent the LGBT community in the municipal team, but also better protect the rights in the city of Girona.
