(Blogmensgo, July 5, 2012) A Delémont all decked out and the Jura have worked hard to make Pride Jura 2012 a notable success. Some 3 000 people and an intense sun proved this to be right, making the procession an impressive pride.

Two priests at the head of a strong contingent of ten units, banners in support, claimed to defend family values before disappearing a few minutes later, leaving the procession scroll without further incident.

(Blogmensgo, June 22, 2012) The Pride Jura will be held this year on 30 June and 1 July 2012 in Delémont in the Jura. We are talking about here in the Swiss canton of Jura, not the French department namesake. The event is in partnership with MensGo.

The municipality of Delémont’s slogan is “A city that laughs.” Oh, the cow! one is tempted to say. And it’s true that there will be a cow programming for the Pride of Jura Delémont.

(The generic theme of Pride and Exchange 2012 will change. Like what you love with all the puns in Delémont on this blog.)

The parade itself is announced for the Saturday, more precisely from 1500hrs, just after a session of speeches that are more or less institutional. Then there will be a bit much for the ears and the eyes – and the funny bone, otherwise it would not be a Pride.

And just after, 1600hrs to 2230hrs, there will be a bit much for the eyes and the ears. It’s time for concerts. Except that, for once will not hurt, there will be none for fans of house, techno and rap.

Jazz will be honored with our Swiss jazz singer Steven Gallavin, whom has featured a few times on this blog. In July 2011, we featured a very detailed section on Steven and his career. In January 2012, we also published an article by about the cover of Nina Simone by Steven which of course…I made my cameo role in.  Unfortunately, my talent as an actor has not yet been picked up so I am still here writing for MensGo (not that I would give it up but may be required to by my agents).

Catherine d’Oex is the only name that, among six other artists scheduled, reminds me of something very specific. It is true that Catherine d’Oex is known for his involvement in the fight against HIV / AIDS. Something in common with Steven, who led the association VoGay from 2004 to 2010. It is not clear whether the two Vaudois artists to make a beef Delémont.

(The cow … beef – Boom Boom.)

No way for Steven to sit back on stage. © Gallavin.com.

Not to be jealous, these are the names of five other artists scheduled for The Brats, Schwubs, Ishmael Schneider, Charlotte Sometimes and King’s Queer.

The concerts will be followed by a disco night and an after party. Just have a look at the program.

And like any self-respecting Pride, cultural events are sure. It starts already with several exhibitions, it will continue Friday, June 29 with a screening of the inevitable Harvey Milk (there can be no cow milk) and it will end on Sunday July 1, with such an apotheosis of events that I’m too lazy to list.

Flying the flag for Geneva! ©MBevan - July 2011

(Blogmensgo, July 7, 2011) Geneva Pride, aptly titled ‘Pride 2011’ drew in nearly

10,000 people on July 2, 2011.  The police state a different figure of 1000, but having been there myself, I can vouch that it was closer to the 10,000 mark! The parade started at Quai Wilson, went over the Mont Blanc bridge and travelled through the city centre finishing in the beautiful ‘Des Bastions’ a former Botanical gardens which is now a large park.

For the afternoon, the park hosted a number of stands including: Magic Radio, H20 Swimming club, VoGay, LesTime and the Pink Cross amongst many others…a stage was set up in the park which provided entertainment and dancing.  The party went on in the park until about 11pm and then followed on with a party in the Stade de Genéve until 5am!

Marjorie Blanchet, one of the organisers of pride, stated that it’s main theme would be ‘less visual and more political, it will look for vindication’ of the gay rights movement.  The slogan of the 2011 parade was ‘We have equal duties, We want equal rights’. (Information obtained from Geneva Living.

The problem is homophobia, not homosexuality ©MBevan 2011

Pride marchers demanded enactment of a law against homophobia in Switzerland, a country where there are very few openly gay workers in finance, banking and public sectors.  The banner in French says ‘The problem is homophobia, not homosexuality’.

Equal rights was at the heart of the procession without any commercial gains. The same equal rights demanded for homosexual as heterosexual couples, at the moment the PACS (Civil partnership) has certain exceptions such as no rights to adopt children, no right to take on the partners surname and no rights to IVF.

The third request was to maintain human dignity, to bring an end to the practice of forcing transgendered people to be sterilized before being officially recognised by their status.  For a country that sets the standards for human rights around the world, the marchers were not asking for much it seems!

Jura Pride 2012 ©MBevan 2011

The last pride in Geneva was in 2008.  There does not seem to be any information out there yet for Pride 2012 but Jura have announced theirs for June 30th, 2012, being a relatively small place, I am sure they will need our support and there is plenty of time for you to plan ahead and maybe integrate it into your next years holidays!

The next pride event I will be reporting from will be Manchester, UK at the end of August where they are celebrating their 21st Birthday! Watch this space! in the meantime….watch this video!
