(Blogmensgo, gay blog of May 24, 2017) Learsi Ferrer and Miranda Melanson were elected prom queens twice already: In 2016 and this year again at their senior prom on May 19. Gay and lesbian couples do not end up on the final prom ballot often, and this is the first time that a same-sex couple wins at the senior prom.
Having been dating for four years already, Learsi and Miranda had asked last year to participate as a couple instead of with a boy each, and they were allowed to. In the end, they won the prom in 2016 and once again in their final year in 2017.
Before that, the winning couples had always been straight. At least in terms of their attire, Learsi and Miranda held up the traditions: Miranda wore a suit and Learsi an evening gown.
As soon as the winners were announced, the DJ played “Just the Way We Are” by Bruno Mars (see video above), and the 300 present youths starting singing altogether.
By the way, the Somerville High School has seized the opportunity to introduce gender-neutral terms. Instead of Prom Queen and Prom King, it will be called “Royalty Couple” from now on.
Another good choice for the DJ would of course have been Jimmy Somerville with “To Love Somebody.”
Learsi and Miranda want to both continue their education at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston next year. Maybe they will win the prom there once again – who knows?
Just as a reminder: Massachusetts was the first state of the USA to allow same-sex marriage back on May 17, 2004.
